An afternoon dedicated to 17 metres. Many connections to Europe but also to North America and Asia. In the evening/night we return to the low bands trying to carry out some more DX.

Complice la routine quotidiana che mi impone, anche durante le vacanze, di alzarmi prima del sorgere del sole, ho approfittato del favore della notte per mettere a log sui 60 e sugli 80 metri delle stazioni oltreoceano abbastanza interessanti. Fra queste, una in particolare, J88IH non ero ancora riuscito a collegarla. Un buon inizio di giornata!

Thanks to the daily routine which requires me, even during holidays, to get up before the sun rises, I took advantage of the favor of the night to log some quite interesting overseas stations on 60 and 80 metres. Among these, one in particular, J88IH, I had not yet managed to connect. A good start to the day!

Dopo qualche tentativo senza successo di mettere a log qualche stazione sui 40 e sugli 80, la serata è finita sui 60 metri portando a casa tanti frizzanti collegamenti in ambito europeo. NH2NO ha provato a fare qualche chiamata verso l'Europa, ma le prime ore della notte non sono state benevole per gli skip lunghi su questa frequenza.

After a few unsuccessful attempts to log some stations on 40 and 80, the evening ended on 60 meters bringing home many sparkling connections in Europe. NH2NO tried to make some calls to Europe, but the early hours of the night were not kind to long skips on this frequency.

The evening of the first day of the year was also dedicated to the low bands. Good propagation on the 80s and lots of nice links.

I would like to point out that the World Wide Award 2024 S.E.S has started and that to obtain the diploma you need at least 100 points which can be accumulated with connections to accredited stations.

Libero da impegni di lavoro, ho dedicato una bella e piacevole giornata a collezionare collegamenti. Dopo l'intera mattinata e la prima parte del pomeriggio passati sui 20 metri in FT4, la serata si è conclusa sugli 80 metri e, poco prima della mezzanotte, anche sui 160. 119 QSO conclusi e tanta soddisfazione.

Free from work commitments, I dedicated a beautiful and entire day to collecting connections. After the entire morning and the first part of the afternoon spent on 20 meters in FT4, the evening ended on 80 meters and, just before midnight, also on 160. 119 QSOs concluded and a lot of satisfaction.

La serata di oggi è inziata con qualche chiamata sui 60 metri ma dopo qualche minuto di tentativi si notava subito che il traffico sulla banda era abbastanza scarso, almeno dal mio QTH. il proseguimento è stato sui 40 metri sino a poco dopo l'ora di cena, ma dopo un inizio che faceva ben sperare, ad un certo punto i cancelli della propagazione si sono chiusi. Virando sugli 80 invece, sembra che con il favore della notte si riescano a fare bei QSO.

Today's evening started with a few calls on 60 meters but after a few minutes of attempts it was immediately noticeable that the traffic on the band was quite poor, at least from my QTH. the continuation was on 40 meters until shortly after dinner time, but after a promising start, at a certain point the propagation gates closed. Turning to 80 instead, it seems that with the favor of the night you can make good QSOs.

Dopo aver installato sul mio Macbook una nuova versione del programma WSJT-X, la versione 2.6, sul monitor è apparso un messaggio che indicava che MacOS non era in grado di allocare correttamente la memoria per l'avvio del programma.

Il problema, dopo un pò di sbattimenti, ho compreso fosse situato in alcune impostazioni di base di MacOS che non consentivano al software WSJT-X di utilizzare la memoria necessaria al suo funzionamento.

Qualora venisse riscontrato lo stesso problema, si può facilmente risolvere aprendo "terminale" e digitando i seguenti comandi:

sudo sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmmax=104857600

sudo sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmall=25600

Verrà richiesto di inserire la password di amministratore ma al termine il programma tornerà a funzionare come prima.

After installing a new version of the WSJT-X program, version 2.6, on my Macbook, a message appeared on the monitor indicating that MacOS was unable to properly allocate memory for the program to start.

The problem, after a bit of confusion, I understood that it was located in some basic settings of MacOS which did not allow the WSJT-X software to use the memory necessary for its operation.

If the same problem is encountered, it can be easily solved by opening "terminal" and typing the following commands:

sudo sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmmax=104857600

sudo sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmall=25600

You will be asked to enter the administrator password but upon completion the program will return to work as before.

Scrissi qualche mese fa un breve post sul QRP, non è passato molto tempo ma la mia idea è un pò cambiata da allora. Utilizzo due radio per l'attività in portatile, il mitico Yaesu FT 818 e un apparato di provenienza cinese, l'RS 918, entrambi con peculiarità diverse ed entrambi con pregi e difetti che è inutile trattare in questo momento. Utilizzo lo Yaesu in fonia e l'RS 918 solo per il digitale e, se si da un'occhiata alla mia pagina QRZ, nel logbook /QRPP (Si utilizzo meno di 5 watt in portatile), sarà possibile notare come anche con poca potenza i collegamenti si riescono ad effettuare, non con la stessa facilità con cui si possono fare con 100 watt, ma nemmeno in modo esageratamente difficile. Non è un trucco, non è bravura, non è un miracolo della propagazione, semplicemente, in QRP, è importante curare tutto quello che è intorno alla radio, dall'antenna, al cavo passando per l'alimentazione. In questo caso, fidatevi, i collegamenti si faranno. Nel corso del prossimo futuro saranno affrontati i dettagli necessari per ottenere il miglior risultato durante l'attività portatile, dettagli che si avrà cura di aggiornare ogni volta che nuove esperienze porteranno risultati soddisfacenti.

I wrote a short post about QRP a few months ago, not much time has passed but my idea has changed a bit since then. I use two radios for portable work, the legendary Yaesu FT 818 and a device of Chinese origin, the RS 918, both with different peculiarities and both with strengths and weaknesses that it is useless to discuss at this moment. I use the Yaesu for voice and the RS 918 only for digital and, if you take a look at my QRZ page, in the /QRPP logbook (I use less than 5 watts on a laptop), you will be able to see how even with little power the connections can be made, not with the same ease with which they can be made with 100 watts, but not excessively difficult either. It's not a trick, it's not skill, it's not a miracle of propagation, simply, in QRP, it's important to take care of everything around the radio, from the antenna to the cable through the power supply. In this case, trust me, the connections will be made. In the near future, the details necessary to obtain the best result during portable activity will be addressed, details that will be updated every time new experiences bring satisfactory results.
